Abu
Surrounded by lush greenery, Mount Abu is a very soothing sight to
behold in the desert land of Rajasthan. This beautiful hill station
is situated at a height of 1219 meters, near the southern tip of the
Aravalli range. One of the most beautiful places in Rajasthan, Mount
Abu is mainly covered by coniferous trees and flowering shrubs. Everything
about Mount Abu is unique and beautiful. In fact, the curved road
that leads to this only hill station of Rajasthan is a wonder in itself.
Covered by huge rocks in odd shapes and high velocity winds lashing
at them all the while, it is an experience to remember. Apart from
its pleasant climate, Mount Abu is famous as a popular pilgrimage
center. It is home to the magnificent Dilwara Jain Temples that date
back to anywhere between the 11th and 13th centuries. According to
legends, Mount Abu is home to the 330 million gods and goddesses of
the Hindu pantheon. A number of sages and saints are also supposed
to have lived in Mount Abu, the most famous of them being sage Vashishtha
. He is said to have created four Rajput clans from a fire pit to
protect the earth from demons.

Tourist Attractions in Mount Abu
Dilwara Jain Temple :
Built
sometime during the 11th and 13th centuries, these exquisitely carved
temples are dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. The Vimal Vasahi temple
dedicated to the first Tirthankara was built in 1031 AD and is the
oldest of all them all. The central shrine houses an image of Rishabdev
while 52 smaller shrines surround the courtyard, each housing a beautiful
statue of the Tirthankaras. Another famous example is the Lun Vashi
Temple built in 1231 AD.
Adhar Devi Temple :
The Adhar Devi temple may not be in the same category as Dilwara temples,
yet the temple deserves mention for being one of the few rock cut
temples of the country. This temple has been very carefully chiseled
out of a huge rock. Devotees have to climb 360 stairs to reach the
temple.
Gaumukh Temple :
The Gaumukh temple of Mount Abu is an ancient temple that finds mention
in ancient religious scriptures. Legend has it that sage Vashishtha
had performed a famous yagna at the place. The temple is located in
picturesque environs with a few natural springs flowing nearby. 
Nakki Lake :
The
most beautiful spot of Mount Abu, Nakki lake is surrounded by scenic
hills, colourful parks and some unique rock formations. Tourists come
to the place in large numbers to enjoy the beauty of the place. It
is believed that this lake was scooped out by God using his nails.
Situated close to Nakki lake is a temple dedicated to Shri Raghunathji.
Achalgarh :
NThis grand 14th century fort is some 8 kms away from Amount Abu and
houses some very beautiful Jain temples. The Achaleswar Mahadev Temple
(1412 AD) and the Kantinath Jain Temple (1513 AD) are two of the best
examples.

Shopping is another popular pastime of tourists coming to Mount
Abu. The markets of Mount Abu remain full of Rajasthani handicraft
and handloom products. This includes traditional textile varieties,
gold and silver jewellery, carvings in wood, marble and metal, Rajasthani
paintings, leather articles and stone crafts. The shops around Nakki
lake constitute the main shopping centre of the place. The shops
remain full of curious in marble, sandalwood and sandstone, saris,
bangles and linen with Sanganeri prints. To buy handicraft and handloom
products, Rajasthali-the Government emporium is the best place.
